Top of Wayne County Index
We have a computerized database that indexes local newspapers
(some of which go back to the 1820s.) Two thirds of the entries
are obituaries. Each entry gives the person’s name, age (if known),
reason he/she was in the newspaper, an abbreviation for the name
of the newspaper, the date, page
and column number. In addition to
name entries there are also subject listings such as business names,
and broad subject categories such as “Fires” or “Accidents.”
This database can be accessed in two ways:
IN HOUSE: go to the main menu on
the DYNIX system. Type in the
number for “Community Resource Searches” and hit return. Then choose
“1” to search the newspaper by keyword or “2” to search by subject.
Hit return. (A keyword search is
likely to get more hits, but you will also
sort through more entries that have nothing to do with what you are
seeking.) When you get a list of entries, type in the number or the item you
wish to see and hit return. (If
the full date, page and column number does
not show up, hit return again to get the next page. Print or write down the
entire location for each item you wish to see, and ask the librarian to get
the newspaper microfilm for you.
ON THE INTERNET: go to
www.mrl.lib.in.us/ On the
first page of our
website, click on the icon for “Online Catalog WebPAC” On the next
page choose “Newspaper Index” from the list of choices.” On the next
page choose to search either by “words” or “subject”. Enter your search
words. A list of entries should appear.
Click on the ones you wish to see.
We will copy up to ten obituaries per genealogist and mail them to you.
Because we have limited manpower, and it takes over fifteen minutes to
copy each item, we cannot go over this limit of ten. To get them send
a letter with the full citations for the items you are requesting, ten cents
per copy, and two first class postage stamps to: Genealogy, Reference
Department, Morrisson-Reeves Library, 80 North 6th Street, Richmond,
IN 47374. (No e-mail requests,
please)
R977.263 O58 -- Marcia O’Neal has compiled several indexes of local
newspapers. These differ from the
card file by covering smaller periods of
time more thoroughly. These indexes list any time a name was mentioned
in a newspaper, for any reason, not just obituaries. Entries give name,
reason the person was in the newspaper, date, page and column number.
If more than one newspaper is indexed in a volume, there will be an
abbreviation for the paper. These indexes include the following:
