Your house has a history:
Here's how to find it

Online Index to Local Newspapers

We have local newspapers on microfilm going back to 1822. Over the years we have created a highly selective in-house index to these newspapers, which is available online through our online card catalog, or WebPAC.

The Newspaper Index is useful in at least two ways when researching the history of your house:

  1. If your abstract or one of the maps list your house as belonging to a subdivision or neighborhood (e.g., Reeveston or Grand Boulevard) , look in the card file under the heading CITY PLANNING to see if there are newspaper articles about the development of that area.
  2. Once you know the names of former owners, you can look them up by name in the biographical section of the newspaper index. (This section primarily lists notices.)

To search the newspaper index:

*For the index to function, you must have java enabled in your web browser

*To navigate once you are in the WebPAC use the blue and gold back and forward arrow buttons, not the back arrow button from your browser. If you use the back arrow button from the browser, you will be taken back to the Morrisson-Reeves homepage and will have to enter the WebPAC again.

*If you would like to print citations from the newspaper index, you will need to have pop-ups enabled for sites from www.mrl.lib.in.us

Webpac menu screen capture

  • Select Newspaper Index from the menu
  • Select Newspaper Subjects or Newspaper Words from the "Choose an index to search" pulldown menu
  • In the box next to the phrase "Enter a word or phrase," enter your search terms.

If you search by subject, an alphabetical list will be displayed that begins with the first instance of the first subject word you typed. You may then highlight any of the displayed subjects and choose "Show Details." Please note that there may be more than one article under a given subject heading. Once you have done this, a set of articles will be presented that can be ordered by clicking once on the headings at the top of the displayed set. For example, clicking on "Date" will order the set in date order from most recent to oldest. You may then highlight any article from this set and again choose "Show Details" to display the complete citation.

If you search by keyword, a set of articles will be displayed in which the word or words you have typed appear somewhere in the title, subject headings, or abstract. Once you have done this, a set of articles will be presented that can be ordered by clicking once on the headings at the top of the displayed set. For example, clicking on "Date" will order the set in date order from most recent to oldest. You may then highlight any article from this set and again choose "Show Details" to display the complete citation.

For each newspaper article, please provide yourself with a complete citation. The online index will provide all the information you need to do this. Only printing each record individually will provide you with the full citation. A complete citation will include the following information:

  • Name of the Newspaper
  • Edition
  • Title of the Article
  • Subject (Name of the person you seek)
  • Section
  • Page
  • Column
  • Date the Article Appeared

(Note: Sometimes an Edition or Section will not be specified. They are important only if they are given.)

A pop-up window will appear telling you that a new browser window will be opened with the data that you requested. Click ok and the new window opens. Print using your browsers print option (found in the file menu).
