Your house has a history:
Here's how to find it

A Morrisson-Reeves Library Subject Guide

Web resources for finding your house history

INSPIRE

Online Index to Local Newspapers

We have local newspapers on microfilm going back to 1822. Over the years we have created a highly selective in-house index to these newspapers, which is available online through our online card catalog, or UNICORN. Helpful tips on searching.

The Newspaper Index is useful in at least two ways when researching the history of your house:

  1. If your abstract or one of the maps list your house as belonging to a subdivision or neighborhood (e.g., Reeveston or Grand Boulevard) , look in the card file under the heading CITY PLANNING to see if there are newspaper articles about the development of that area.
  2. Once you know the names of former owners, you can look them up by name in the biographical section of the newspaper index. (This section primarily lists notices.)

INSPIRE

The INSPIRE Project is paid for by the State of Indiana and Indiana libraries. INSPIRE includes links to the online catalogs and websites of many Indiana libraries. INSPIRE also includes a vast set of periodical databases. Many of the periodicals on these INSPIRE purchased databases are full text. It can be used to search for additional information on preservation, renovation, and other topics of interest.
